Wherever your plans may take you, here is a countdown of 5 ways to usher in a green 2010. 5) Keep it Close to Home While many cities become major destinations for New Year’s Eve, a wonderful time can still be had at home by flexing your eco-conscious muscles. Cooking ahead of time or even catering a sit-down dinner can be as classy as going out without as much hassle for your guests or gas, paper, or waste that going out can entail. Hosting people to sleep over or enlisting designated driver carpools can also ensure that a safe time is has by all. 4) Carpool or Use Public Transit If you are planning to go out, however, how you get there can make a big difference for how green your evening ends up. Taking a look at the public transit available to get you to your destination ahead of time will make things much easier for you the night of the 31st. If you are driving, carpooling is both the greenest and the safest way for both you and your loved ones. Beyond driving from point A to B, navigating the traffic as well as finding a place to park all add up to much more gas spent than on an average night out. As such, the fewer cars on the road, the better for us all. 3) Green your Food and Beverages Wherever you do eat your last meal of 2009, try to keep it green. When choosing a special restaurant, try for one that offers local or organic fare. When it comes to beverages, there are many great organic sparking wine varieties, such as those from Diamond Organics. While Christmas is only a day away, there are still many things that likely need to be put in order. For those of you who have caught the Christmas spirit, you might be thinking of things in terms of Santa's elves, who are still working at wrapping, stuffing stockings, and decorating the North Pole. Have no fear, however, because the Green Connoisseur is here to help you navigate your way through the world of green festivities. Wrapping Paper Wrapping paper is a beautiful way to be festive and to show the receiver that you care enough to go over the top with ribbons and bows. There are great green ways to show you care, however, other than coating a box in Santa and his reindeer. When it comes to wrapping paper, recycling the used wrapping is a first step towards sustainability. Saving this year’s paper and reusing it for next year is an even greener way. Just tell your loved ones to be careful as they unwrap and collect the paper once the gift has emerged. Another great idea is to use colorful newspapers or magazines that were headed for the recycling bin and choosing images and articles that speak towards the gift recipient. While it may not be store bought, a movie review starring a favorite actor wrapped around a special gift would really show that you care. If you have kids, why not let them decorate with crayons or markets using paper grocery bags as the base. Or, to be truly sustainable, try something completely reusable such as a bandanna or old shirts. Decorations Ribbons for gifts or for a wreath, and ornaments for a tree or for around the house, can all have a green twist. For ribbons, think about using the old tape from a video or cassette. Yesterday, we gave you some great tips on eco-friendly holiday decor and today we'd like to follow up on that with tips on recycling paper and Christmas crafts. These are some really fun things to do with the kids this Christmas, and before long you'll find yourself walking through a luxurious, beautiful winter wonderland! Creating a Christmas Paper Chain You might remember this craft from elementary school, but it's a fun one to share with the kids or use to create some charming holiday decor. The trick is to use paper that would otherwise be destined for the trash - old Christmas cards, stationary, or even paper shopping bags. Using different patterns and colors will create beautiful paper chains that you can hang on the tree, run along the mantel or something else. Making Paper Snowflakes This is a fun craft that I do with my kids - partially because it's the only way we're going to have snow for Christmas and also because it's fun! Being luxurious can sometimes mean that you are able to take that extra step towards sustainability and green living. While water has long been on the radar as an environmental concern, for most Americans, rain has barely been considered a solution. While we, the eco-conscious, will turn off the water while brushing our teeth, take shorter showers, and conserve water in the laundry process, we allow the rain that covers our homes and communities to go down the drain, serving little purpose other than perhaps a gentle car-wash. Attitudes towards rain water are changing, however, and an Australian company has created a chic product that makes rain harvesting easy. Inspiration Australia, as an island nation, is well aware of the threat of global warming. Australia recently suffered from 5 years of drought, which started the wheels turning for how to interact more sustainably with water. An average suburban home with a roof area of 1,000 square feet can capture about 600 gallons of water from only 1 inch of rain. Using tested methods, the company Aussie Rain Tanks figured out that you can divert the first batch of “dirty” rain, which collects the dirt and dust that inevitably settles on the roof. The rain after that point is clean and is filtered before being stored in a tank. Uses and Models The rain stored in the Aussie Rain Tanks is used exclusively to flush toilets through additionally plumbing to the house. Should the tank become empty, there is a back-up connection to the municipal water supply so no problems should arise. The Aussie Rain Tanks website concentrates mostly on water conservation in California, as it is the most populous state and has an unstable water supply. These tanks, however, can be used all throughout the United States. Their models range from the “tower” which can become a feature piece in your yard or garden, to the “under deck” which is completely hidden from sight. A recent Sarah Palin Newsweek cover generated quite a stir in the political and media world, as well as the eco fashion industry. The cover shot was a photo of Palin by Runner's World Magazine and the publication notes that Newsweek did not have permission to use the image. Former governor Palin found the photo selection degrading, sexist, and irrelevant, according to her Facebook updates regarding the coverage.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at The Green Connoisseur! As you're preparing to settle down to your holiday feast and spend time with family and friends, consider a few tips to make your Thanksgiving more eco-friendly and minimize your household's impact on the planet.

Break out the china: Resist the urge to use disposable plates and utensils this year. Not only will real tableware and cloth napkins improve the ambience of your gathering, they will drastically reduce the amount of garbage your feast generates.
Turn down the lights: Save electricity and continue setting the festive mood with candlelight dining. Set the table with soy candles rather than overhead lighting. Instead of football games and holiday parades, gather up the board games to keep everyone occupied until mealtime.
Recycle and compost: Scraps and containers that must be thrown away can get new use in the recycle and compost bins. Other unused food scraps can feed your local wildlife. Search for organizations in your community that can reuse excess grease and oils if your using a fryer this year.
Make the most of leftovers: Even with careful planning, you will probably have an abundance of food left over after everyone has their fill. Make arrangements with local shelters to get rid of anything that won't be eaten by your family; pack up the rest in reusable containers and take advantage of some creative Thanksgiving leftover recipes.

Innovative Eco-Fashion: Fragment Textiles

It's hard to imagine what eco-fashion would be like if taken to its logical conclusion, but Dutch designers Berber Soepboer and Fioen van Balgooi offer one intriguing vision of the possibilities. The Fragments collection conforms to cradle-to-cradle standards, creating the absolute minimum amount of waste. Beginning with colorful zero-impact felt, these pieces are puzzles created from shapes that can be cut with hardly any fabric waste (squares for the dress, and stars for the skirt). In addition, the pieces are constructed using small tabs instead of stitching, allowing them to be reconfigured for novelty value and maintained by replacing only the necessary pieces in the event of damage or excessive wear.

These designs are currently unavailable online, but another piece by Soepboer (the Color-In Dress) has recently become available due to popular demand, so with any luck the Fragments collection will soon follow suit.

The popular television network NBC has declared the week of November 15th “Green Week.” From environmental themed shows to public service announcements on how to be more sustainable, NBC spent last week trying to inform the public and make a difference. PSAs “The more you know” has long been the catchphrase for NBC’s public service announcements, but last week’s programming was peppered with many more announcements than usual. These announcements are in place to educate people on sustainable tips, ranging from using reusable shopping bags to conserving water. These announcements are made by actors from many of the different NBC shows. One interesting tactic that NBC has taken is to post the PSAs from this year’s Green Week online, as well as those from Green Weeks in 2008 and 2007. Check out their website to see all of these sustainable messages. Green Tips In addition to their on-air sustainability tips, NBC.com offers a variety of insight on green living. While some of the information they offer overlaps with topics that The Green Connoisseur has already discussed, they have a very convenient short list of important green tips, such as shopping at a farmer’s market, which is always a great thing to review. Programming The commitment to a green theme was taken so seriously this year that most of the shows airing on NBC has sustainability related messages. The late-night commentary made green jokes while some sitcoms included their own “Green Week” within the show. Al Gore was involved and there was even a green wedding featured on a soap opera! This week is to be coupled with NBC’s commitment to green programming during Earth Week in April to offer two weeks worth of environmental commitment a year. We all know what SIM cards are - the little card stuck inside your cell phone that keeps track of your personal data. Oberthur Technologies, the "second largest provider of smart card-based solutions" has created the first eco-friendly SIM card on the market. EcoSIM is smaller than traditional SIM cards, and half the plastic is used in its creation. Whereas a sheet of plastic the size of a credit card was traditionally used to make one SIM card, it makes two EcoSIM cards. Eco-friendly packaging also makes a major difference in the carbon footprint left behind. CO2 emissions generated during the making of each card has been reduced from 16g to 8g. The paper used in packaging the EcoSIM is certified by both the Forest Stewardship Council and the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes. Both of these are non-profit organizations dedicated to preserving the world's forests. Oberthur had a soft launch earlier this year, sending 10 million cards to mobile phone creators. Recycling has evolved beyond placing your paper and bottles out on the curb for pick-up. Many beautiful pieces, from jewelry to artwork, clothing to new fangled devices, have been made out of recyclable material. Things like glass bottles, tin cans, and cardboard have become the silk and leather for today’s eco-conscious yet luxury-seeking consumer. While these recycled items can be beautiful and very green, some people have taken a different approach to reuse. Non-recyclable materials thus have become the subject of a lot of creative thinking. Most products come in packaging. While the glass jar of juice can be easily recycled by a municipal recycling center, the juice-box in your child’s lunch cannot. While the bottle of ice-tea you’re drinking can be recycled, the plastic label around it might make it to the recycling plant, but only to be discarded upon arrival. Enter TerraCycle. At TerraCycle, the liability of discarded wrappers and non-recyclable juice boxes become their greatest asset. They work to product consumer goods out of discarded consumer waste. They take these items and, through a great deal of innovation and creativity, turn them into something new and fabulous. The Features

Available in 3 sizes - 40, 46, and 52 inch models - the Sony KDL-VE5 has a sleek design, an interactive menu system, and most of the features found in other comparable HDTVs on the market today. The energy-saving presence sensor is what sets this model apart from similar sets.

The sensor, located in the middle of the speaker bar, can be set for 5 minutes, 30, or 60 and detects movement within 10 feet of the TV. If nothing is sensed within the given time limit, a warning appears on the screen and the television's screen goes dark. Power consumption drops to about half of full operation during this time.

If the sensor detects motion again, the picture will come back on. After 30 minutes with no movement in the room, the sound is also cut - dropping power consumption to nearly nothing. There are few things I find more enjoyable than cheese. Be it melted or cold, by itself or incorporated into a dish, I consider cheese to be the utmost in culinary delight. When it comes to which variety or brand of cheese to eat, however, the choices can be complex. Cheese can come from cows, goats, buffalo, or sheep. Some varieties of cheese are more or less energy intensive, and some farms even make organic cheese. While I consider all cheese to be good, having an environmentally sound cheese can make it truly great. I therefore hope to provide a slice of guidance on how to find eco-conscious, delectable cheese. Food Miles The easiest and perhaps most effective way of making eco-conscious decisions about cheese depends on the location of origin. Knowing your approximate distance from different locations can help you determine how far your block of cheese traveled to reach you. While there are some specific regions in the United States—such as Vermont, Wisconsin, and California—that are well known for their cheeses, a local version might be just as delightful. If the above are your only choices for cheese decisions, however, it is very important to know which one of these national cheese havens is closest to you. The closer the origin, the less fuel used in transport. If you cannot find cheese produced in your state at your grocery store, a local farmer’s market might be the place to find it. Many farmers make their own cheese and bring it to sell. This fresh cheese can be some of the most delicious and most environmentally sound. Pantry Dangers: Are Canned Foods Silent Killers?

Canned foods are a modern day convenience that many busy households would be lost without. Even our favorite organic options are available in simple packaging, ready to heat up and serve. Canned convenience ensures a healthy, well-balanced meal on rushed weeknights and can cut recipe times in half - but recent reports have discovered that our favorite shortcuts in the kitchen may be causing more harm than they're worth.

BPA in Cans

The dangers of BPA (Bisphenol A) are already known - increased risks of cancer, reproductive abnormalities, and risks of other diseases including diabetes and heart problems. Research has shown that many plastic containers can transfer the chemical into foods and drinks, allowing it to be ingested and enter the blood stream.

Consumer Reports has conducted tests on canned foods for the presence of BPA as well - and the results are disturbing. 19 different brands of canned vegetables, soups, juices, and tuna were examined and almost all of the cans contained at least some amount of the dangerous chemical - including organic varieties, as well as cans labeled as 'BPA-free'.

The Dangers

While a 'safe level' of BPA hasn't been determined by the FDA, animal studies have shown ill effects in exposure to 2.4 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day. Experts suggest daily levels over .0024 micrograms based on weight could be dangerous to humans.

The average can of green beans from the tests conducted yielded an average of 123.5 parts per billion of BPA. A 165-pound adult would ingest about 80 times the recommended 'safe level' of BPA from a single serving of these veggies - a level that could be detrimental to a child, especially children eating several servings of canned foods and juices per day.

What Can You Do?

Of course, fresh is always best for you, your family, and the planet. Visit your local farmers' market or plant your own garden for fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables. When you have to shop for packaged foods, there are steps you can take to minimize the risks:

Opt for plastic-packaged food over cans. Tests found lower levels of BPA in most plastic pouches and containers, with the exception of Chef-Boyardee's microwaveable containers with metal peel-off lids.
Urge state and federal officials to enact legislation that eliminates the use of BPA in all products that come in contact with food.
Contact the companies that package your foods and ask them to step up as leaders to protect the health of consumers. Change.org has already started a petition to leading canned soup manufacturer, Campbell's, requesting their initiative in eliminating BPA in canned foods.

November is here. The leaves are changing color and falling down. Frost is starting to appear. While we are moving quickly into winter, here are some late fall gems to keep you going for the rest of the season. 1) Multi-color Leaf Creations If you live anywhere near trees as they are losing their leaves, you are probably overwhelmed at this time by the magnitude of leaves accumulating in the street, on the sidewalk, and in yards everywhere. While you might not be thinking of these leaves as anything special, take a second to really observe. Their colors, from deep red to pale green and everywhere in between, are really beautiful. For your kids or for the child inside, consider celebrating the colors of the leaves by making a piece of art. While a leaf crown, wreath, or bouquet may only last a few days, the joy it will bring is definitely worth it. First, pick leaves towards the top of the piles, meaning they are fresher and are less likely to have been stepped on or gotten dirty. Rinse and dry the leaves gently, then go for it! Try sewing or tying the leaves together with thread at their stalks. The results will be stunning. 2) Autumn is for Vegetables After having binged on the extra candy and while still picking up the spider webs, streamers, and ghoulish decorations that made our houses so scarily festive just a week ago, we all know that Halloween has come and gone. While the pumpkin, a Halloween decorative classic, is clearly in season, there are many other autumnal vegetables can really be special this time of year. Jerusalem artichokes, glorious varieties of mushrooms, red cabbage, cauliflower, and members of the kale family are particularly delicious right now. When I searched for “ice cream shops Pittsburgh” I came across a very helpful site that listed and gave background on many of the local ice cream options. 6) Take a Picture November is a great time to take out the camera, as the colors and the clarity that comes with the cold make for ideal conditions. Taking walks with your camera before it is too cold will yield an opportunity for some strikingly beautiful nature photographs. One idea is to find a tree that still has some leaves, preferably one near your home or that you would pass by frequently. Once you have a tree in mind, pick an angle that you find particularly beautiful. Then, take a picture everyday from the same angle to watch the development and change taking place with this tree. Once all the leaves have dropped, there likely will not be not too much change in the winter months. Once spring returns, however, you can pick up this project and document the re-growth. If art is really a part of your life, you could even choose your favorite fall shots and use them as inspiration to paint during the dead of winter when this wonderful transitional period is over. Southwest Greens Travel with Eco-Friendlier Plane

Air travel has gained a reputation of being an environmentally detrimental method of transportation, guzzling petroleum-based fuels and emitting an array of harmful gases into the atmosphere. While solar planes and biomass jet fuel may still be wishful thinking, a number of airlines are taking initiative and doing their part to minimize the impact of flight. Southwest's eco-friendly policies are on the forefront with the introduction of a new green plane that promises to improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions.

The Green(er) Jet

Rather than invest in bio and algae-based fuel research like some airlines, Southwest is implementing eco-friendly materials that reduce the weight of their aircraft, thus saving fuel, while also reducing waste and minimizing interior maintenance.

The test plane, a Boeing 737-700, features:

Smaller life vest bags made of canvas instead of metal, reducing weight by a pound per passenger and providing increased leg room and storage space;
Lighter weight foam fill in passenger seats that reduce weight while improving comfort;
Recyclable aluminum seat rub strips rather than plastic to maximize durability and minimize waste;
Recycled carpet, installed in sections for easy localized replacement - also reducing waste as well as labor costs;

Two new eco-friendly seat covers are being tested on the green plane: e-leather, a synthetic scuff-resistant leather alternative made of post-consumer waste, and IZIT Leather, a long-lasting, lightweight alternative to premium leather. The combined changes offer an overall weight reduction of nearly 5 pounds per seat and could save the airline as much as $10 million per year in fuel and maintenance costs.

Other Eco Initiatives From Southwest

Like many airline companies, Southwest has already switched to paperless tickets. Styrofoam cups have been replaced with eco-friendlier paper and winglets have been installed to improve fleet efficiency. A better onboard recycling program will also be underway for all Southwest flights, beginning this November.

Flexitarian: Mostly Meatless

Back in the '60s and '70s, when vegetarianism was first catching on in the United States, the term was used more loosely than it is today. Any modern vegetarian, used to being offered fish or chicken by well-meaning hosts, will tell you that this word usage just isn't practical.

Today, vegetarians generally agree that they won't eat any food with a face. Still, with more and more households interested in the vegetarian movement but not willing to forgo meat entirely, there's a growing need for something new. Thus, flexitarianism.

Flexitarian is a loosely defined term, by its nature. In general, flexitarians eat some animal proteins, perhaps just fish and poultry. Most also limit consumption, for example by preparing small portions, focusing on vegetable-based meals at home, or limiting meats to one or two days per week (or less). While not strictly flexitarian, this concept can also be applied to mixed-diet households, where preparing completely separate menus for different people can be a real challenge.

Luckily, this is a common enough situation these days that there are lots of great resources for flexitarians. Almost Meatless is an intriguing new cookbook of vegetable-based meals incorporating a small amount of meat. The Flexitarian Diet includes lots of useful health and menu information (as well as plenty of simple and tasty recipes) for people making this transition. Many Moosewood cookbooks, including Moosewood Restaurant New Classics, even feature a section on seafood in addition to lots of vegetarian favorites.

Since going vegetarian can reduce the average American diet's carbon footprint by half or more, this is a new trend that we can all benefit from, regardless of eating style.

The Great Barrier Reef: Eco-tourism with a Mission

On a recent trip, I had the great privilege to go to Australia, where I stayed on the eco-conscious and luxurious Heron Island. Located 72km off the coast of the Australian mainland, Heron Island is surrounded by part of the Great Barrier Reef. Virtually untouched by society, the only human presence on this small island is from a resort and a research center. At Heron Island, they take a different approach to providing an enjoyable experience for their guests than many modern resorts. While rooms are chic and the food is gourmet, there is a low-tech approach to most of life on Heron Island. The activities available beyond exploring nature include board games, ping-pong, and tennis. The only televisions are located in the bar and while two computers with internet access and two pay phones are provided, the lack of wi-fi and cellular receptions means almost no one is “plugged-in.” This lack of electric-powered devices allows the solar panels placed on the roofs of many buildings to provide much of the power needed to run the island. Additionally, minimal light pollution means spectacular views of the stars. Heron Island is a World Heritage Listed area, meaning that both the island and the island-life are protected. At Heron Island, eco-tourism efforts are in full swing with both the activities available and what the island itself has to offer. Lessons on how to interact with nature are mandatory and that helps to keep the massive bird, fish, coral, turtle, and even whale population healthy and happy. The organization Ecotourism Australia even awarded the resort with Advanced Eco-Certification. While both dive and snorkel boats are available daily for a cost, I found that the most enjoyable activities were free. Hosted by the naturalists on the island, there are bird walks which draw attention to the great diversity of bird-life, as well as reef walks on which you can experience the Great Barrier Reef in an up-close and exciting way. With thousands of birds and hundreds of different types of coral, not to mention the diversity of fish and sea cucumbers, an enjoyment of nature is hard to avoid on Heron Island. While eco-tourism exists all over the world, it is not just green-washing in Australia. While very similar to the United States in many attitudes and lifestyles, the Australian way of life is inherently different. The country is an island, with the vast majority of population residing on the coasts. For Australia, global warming is an incredibly real and serious threat. Beyond the threat of ocean level rise for the mainland, due to the rise of ocean temperatures with global warming, the coral reef is also threatened. According to the World Wildlife Fund, climate change has already adversely affected the reef. A recent report from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority predicts that if the carbon dioxide levels reach the predicted 450 parts per million by 2035, that would mean extreme bleaching of coral which would diminish that ability of the reef to make new coral. Some predict that by 2050, the reef would be completely dead. This unfortunate problem is part of the reason why Australia is fighting hard against climate change and their eco-tourism efforts are a great example of this commitment. For brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag, it started with the need for a messenger bag that would not become ruined and soaked should it rain on the bicycler who carried it. They ended up making their own bag, created from an old airplane tarpaulin, an inner tube and a bit of recycled seat belt. That one bag turned into a career for the brothers - with an online shop, and their products being sold all over the world. Materials Markus and Daniel continue to use the same materials they created that first bag with - old truck or airplane tarpaulins, inner tubes, airbags and seat belts. All of their materials are previously used, and end up creating amazing accessories rather than sitting in a land fill. They purchase their supplies from individuals who have tarps and the other materials that are not needed. While the materials must be in fairly good shape, the manufacturer's logo and marks are not recognizable on the finished bags. Pieces Freitag makes everything from adorable messenger bags in all sizes to tiny pouches and even luggage for trips! The greatest thing about each and every one of the pieces is that they are unique. Sometimes a bit of logo will be showing on the bag, while other times it will simply be a solid color. How the Bags Are Made While that first bag was hand-sewn by the brothers, there is now a factory where more than 80 individuals work to create the Freitag products. Flyin' Hawaiian is a 5-hour rush of spine tingling, high speed views featuring the natural beauty of Maui. The tour boasts 8 unique zipline courses, including the longest line in Hawaii - an amazing 3,600 feet of flying! In addition to the breathtaking scenery and fast-paced action, Flyin' Hawaiian tours also offers visitors a chance to protect and preserve the natural environment around them.

The Thrills

Guests begin their 2.5 mile journey of zipping with a short trainer line before heading off to the 2,800-foot line that soars through the scenic West Maui Mountains. The next line, 1900-feet long, boasts a 500-foot vertical drop and speeds of up to 55 mph. A 2,100-foot line is then completed before guests have the opportunity to ride backwards along the short, but fun, 500-foot zipline that marks the midway point of the tour.

Before braving the final line - more than two-thirds of a mile long and crossing 3 majestic mountain ridges - guests will zip across 2 other lines, totaling 1,400-feet in length. Eco Initiatives

From the construction to participation, Flyin' Hawaiian is an eco-friendly tourist attraction designed to allow guests to enjoy the beauty of Maui without disturbing its fragile ecosystem.

Materials were delivered by helicopter or packed in by hikers;
On-site invasive trees were harvested to build platforms, handrails, and furniture;
Composting toilets are used at the solar-powered rest area;
Reusable water bottles are provided to all guests, eliminating plastic waste along the course;
Native endangered seedlings are planted by every tour group to replenish the preserve.

How to Fly Hawaiian

Since opening in July of 2009, the Flyin' Hawaiian tours have stayed booked well in advance. Reservations are required and should be secured as early as possible. Three groups leave daily, but only 12 people are allowed on each tour. Participants must be at least 10 years old and should be able to carry 10 pounds of gear.
